The General English program offers a Certificate in English.

General English is the study of the English language for practical communication — reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension. It’s about using English effectively.

About the English Program

General English is the study of the English language focused on practical, everyday communication rather than literary analysis or theory. It develops the four core language skills — reading, writing, speaking, and listening — so learners can use English effectively in real-life situations. Grammar and vocabulary form the backbone of General English, giving learners the tools to construct clear and accurate sentences. Reading comprehension is a key component, training learners to understand main ideas, details, and implied meaning in a variety of texts. Writing skills in General English range from simple paragraphs and emails to formal essays and reports, emphasizing clarity and correctness. It is functional and practical in nature, aiming to help learners communicate confidently at work, in study, and in daily life. Unlike Literary Studies, General English does not focus on interpreting novels, poems, or plays — its goal is fluency, accuracy, and effective real-world communication.

Listening practice in General English sharpens the ability to follow conversations, lectures, and announcements at natural speed. Speaking activities build confidence through dialogues, discussions, presentations, and role-plays that mirror real situations. Vocabulary expansion is central, covering synonyms, collocations, idioms, and word formation to enrich expression. Pronunciation and intonation are also addressed, helping learners sound natural and be easily understood. General English often includes functional language such as making requests, giving opinions, apologizing, and negotiating meaning. It is typically taught through communicative methods that prioritize interaction over memorization of rules. Assessment in General English usually measures comprehension, grammar accuracy, vocabulary range, and the ability to write and speak coherently. Ultimately, General English serves as the foundation upon which more specialized studies — including Literary Studies — are built, since without strong language skills, deeper textual analysis becomes difficult.
