Introduction Department Of English

The program continues to attract students across ethnic, racial, and cultural lines, who value Africana Studies as a space to explore the intellectual traditions, historical experiences, and cultural perspectives of one of the nation’s largest racial minority groups. Situated within the English department, the program cultivates advanced competencies in close reading, rhetorical analysis, and scholarly writing, while offering students a critical foundation for graduate study and for professional paths in education, publishing, journalism, law, and public advocacy.

About The Program

The Department of English, under the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (FA), began its journey with two predominant visions: first, to enhance and nourish the mental, ethical, and creative facets of students’ personalities; and second, to prepare them for efficient professional and technical employment in the future. There can be no denying that ethics, values, morality, and creativity are the essential ingredients of nation-building. To realize these aims, the department offers a general English program encompassing reading, writing, speaking, and all required subjects — building the foundational skills students need for academic success and meaningful careers.

As a pioneering private university of this city, IUB has always been committed to imparting these ingredients among its students as the larger concerns of society. The Department of English firmly believes that value-education can bring excellence in leadership, and consequently excellence in nation-building.
